Support team and JCR Welfare Committee

You are always welcome to reach out to any of the support team or welfare committee members. They can offer direct help or signpost you to other services

The University Counselling Service

University wide service available to all students. Counsellors there help many students who present with a wide variety of problems including (but not limited to):

  • issues related to work
  • identity issues
  • personal and relationship problems.

Access to the University Counselling Service is by self-referral, through the completion of an online form. Note however that the waiting lists can stretch to several weeks, especially around exam term.

The Student Support Department

University wide services including counselling, group sessions, and workshops. Find all their information on their website.

SAS – Student Advice Service

The Student Advice Service offers free, confidential and independent support to all Cambridge University students. You can come to the service with any issues or problems that you might experience as a student. You can set up an appointment or reach out via email.

GPs

All students of Downing College should be registered with a GP in Cambridge (most often at Lensfield Medical Practice)

GPs can offer advice and direct you to further treatment or services that can be beneficial to your well-being. As they are trained specialists, you know you’re getting the best advice and support.

NHS mental health

The NHS provides both information and helplines for physical and mental health

Phone: 111 (for urgent help but not emergencies)

Cambridge Samaritans

Samaritans is a non-religious organisation that offers a confidential phone service available at all times.

Mental health helpline: 116 123 (available 24/7)

Lifecraft

A national mental health charity that provides a confidential phone service across Cambridgeshire.

Mental health helpline: 0808 808 2121 (available from 11am to 11pm everyday)

The Royal College of Psychiatrists produces online leaflets, containing useful and informative advice about a range of mental health problems.

Mind is a mental health information service for England and Wales. They provide information, support and understanding to help create a better life for those who experience mental distress. They have a huge number of resources covering both common and less common issues.

Papyrus offers support to young people at risk of suicide, their parents and anyone concerned about a young person they know.

Beat eating disorders offers information and support on eating disorders for those affected, and for those who are worried about a friend or family member. They also provide an online web chat and helpline and helpline
