COMMS WEEK 1- WELCOME BACK!
*****************************************************DOWNING AFFAIRS ***************************************************
1. Blake Society: A message from Hugo & Hannah (Presidents)
We are are the new presidents of the Blake Society and are looking to fill the remaining positions on the committee. The two big positions we are still looking for are the two Vice Presidents. We would like a Vice President of Publicity and a Vice President of Art & Design.
Publicity: someone who is happy to keep the website up to date: the blog, events, photos. promoting the society to the college and beyond.
Art & Design: someone creative who can bring our themes and events to life with decorations, music and aesthetics. We are keen to organise more drawing / informal art events, so it would be marvellous if this person were happy to use their artistic side in getting involved in these workshops!
For those who don’t fancy these particular positions, but would still like to be on the committee, please e-mail back because we are always looking for more Blake enthusiasm.
These positions should not be too work-heavy but a great way to get more involved with the society. Please do send Hannah (hm513) or Hugo (hn289) an e-mail letting us know if you are interested by next Sunday (the 24th).
Blake love,
Hugo Norbury and Hannah Machover

1. Spot Depression Study: Call for Participants
Can depression and bipolar disorder be diagnosed using a spot of dried blood?
That’s what the Cambridge Centre for Neuropsychiatric Research here at the University of Cambridge is trying to find out in its new research study. We are currently recruiting volunteers to complete an online questionnaire and collect a dried blood spot using a kit delivered to their home.
We are looking for individuals diagnosed with:
- Depression,
- Bipolar disorder, and
- No mental illness
3. Behavioural Study
We are looking for participants 18-30 years old with normal or corrected-to-normal vision to take part in a PC-based behavioural study.
Studies take place at Downing Site and participants will be paid £7 per hour for their time. If you are interested in participating, please read the detailed notes below!
The task consists of 6 sessions of 45-90 minutes. During the first session participants perform a few screening tasks to ensure they're eligible to carry on with the remainder of the study. The remaining 5 sessions must be completed on consecutive days but the timing on each day can vary to allow some flexibility. Participants will be paid at a rate of £7 per hour at the end of their last session (first or sixth session). Both orchestras tackle diverse and challenging repertoire, with UCPO holding one concert per University term and UCP performing in Michaelmas and Lent terms only. UCPO rehearses 7.30 - 10pm every Wednesday in University Full Term, while UCP rehearsals are usually held on the three Saturday afternoons preceding concerts. We welcome applications from both students and non-students.
***************************************SUMMER INTERNSHIPS & WORK EXPERIENCE**************************************
1. JOURNALISM IN BOLIVIA: Internships and Training Programmes
Debating whether to go travelling or get work experience instead? Now you can do both.
Bolivian Express is a social enterprise based in La Paz, Bolivia. We offer 1-3 month residential training programmes designed to introduce participants to print journalism and TV production through internships in an international working environment. BX was founded in 2009 by Bolivian journalists and Oxford graduates. Since then, over 170 talented individuals from 20 countries have worked with us, creating 58 issues covering everything from politics and art to football and gay parades. We’ve won the attention of TEDx, local sports stars and even the Bolivian Vice President.
BX Magazine - Print Journalism Programme
You will research and write your own articles or put together photo essays. You will be given extensive editorial support, as well as help with the production of your pieces, also taking part in designing the magazine. During the week you will take lessons in Spanish, journalism and photography, and will also attend newsroom sessions. The magazine is distributed for free across Bolivia and online for the rest of the world.
Is it Right for You? You have an observant eye and inquisitive spirit. Spanish is helpful but not essential. Graduates, current undergraduates and year-abroad students are all welcome; we assign responsibilities in line with experience and reserve spaces for the uninitiated. Working with us you will be immersed in the local environment and, with our support, will get a chance to explore sides of the country largely undiscovered by tourist masses. Your dream career does not have to be journalism; Bolivian Espressos (as former BX interns are known) are sought after by universities and a range of employers for their international experience, level of intellectual engagement and initiative.
Apply: We take up to eight participants every month, and as entry is oversubscribed (especially for the summer months), you should apply immediately if this is for you. A number of previous participants have been able to secure college funding to cover part of the programme and travel expenses involved.
More details are available on our website, where you can also read past issues and apply: http://www.bolivianexpress.org/
